Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using these drugs need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the injections explains the amplified regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of cravings.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

This challenge is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
